In September 1973 the Chilean democratically elected government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in an American Central Intelligence Agency-backed coup d’ etat by the military junta under the leadership of General Augusto Pinochet.

The new regime was characterized by its systematic suppression of opposition political parties and the persecution of dissidents.
