A Slip of the Tongue

The English language can be intriguing, frustrating and bewildering to the learner. Some words give a clue to their meaning simply by their sound such as “lugubrious” which sounds gloomy and “effervescent” which sounds vibrant. But then we get the group of letters “ough” which have, as far as I know, four different pronunciations. We have “rough”, “bough”, “through” and “dough”.
